Looking into Romans 11:36 we see three principles for marriage that if properly understood will transform your marriage forever. Speaking of our Lord Jesus Paul concludes “For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.”
1. From Him
The concept of Marriage comes from the Father and is expressed through His Son Jesus Christ. God designed man in His own image with the capacity for lifelong love, unity, commitment and sacrifice. The role of the husband and wife are rooted in the person of God. The unity and content of a marriage relationship has its source in the unity and relationship of the Trinity. When a man and woman get married they are entering into a divine institution that was conceived in and held together by Jesus Christ. A Christian marriage has the Holy Spirit as a teacher and guide to bring it into God’s purpose for marriage. Once the spouse understands that being married is to be part of something that has its source and purpose in Jesus they can go onto learn to live according to that understanding.
2. Through Him
Colossians 1:16,17 tells us “For through him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.”
Learning that marriage comes from Jesus and seeking Him for His intentions for it allows the husband and wife relationship to be motivated and fueled by His Spirit to reflect heaven’s design. Having a marriage that is founded on what comes from Jesus Christ sets up the possibility of being wholly, completely, 100%, dedicated and committed to revealing the purpose on which their marriage is founded. So what comes from Him as the head the Christian marriage swallows up all that comes from the spouses natural intentions and motivations and a new Godly marriage is produced through Him.
This is how it works…when the husband goes to Jesus and allows Him to honor him with the honor that comes from Him then he can turn to his wife and through the honor he received from Jesus love her with heaven’s unconditional love. When the wife goes to Jesus and allows Him to love her with the love that comes from Him then she can through what she received from Him honor her husband with heaven’s unconditional honor. This ends to wife’s insatiable desire for love and the husbands insatiable desire for honor and starts a phenomenon that comes from Him and through Him.
But if the spouses’ lives are dedicated to filling unmet needs for honor and love then the marriage will be built on strife and vain glory with will only end in self satisfaction which is emptiness. 3. For Him
In the end every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord – the author, the executor and the culmination of all of history. Every one will stand before His throne and give an account for how they believed and lived. The Judgment Seat of Christ for those who believe on Christ and the White Throne Judgment for those who did not believe on Christ. All things are for Him. He is the purpose for all purposes. He is the end point of every life, every plan, every intention. No man lives unto himself but unto Him who created him and before whom each will stand.
Marriage is not about time but eternity. It is not about getting each other’s needs met but about fulfilling the plan that came from Jesus, happens through Jesus and is for Jesus. It is only through the renewing of the mind that a man and wife can be transformed and see what is the will of God (Rom 12:1,2). Only the will of God will stand. A life built on selfish desires and pursuits is like a house built on the sand that when the storms of judgment come will be washed away to ruin. The things that come from Him will ultimately stand before Him and be found to be for Him.
Understanding your marriage is from, through and for Jesus Christ transforms your marriage from being man centered to being God centered which has great eternal and temporal reward.
